Rotary Awareness Month

January is Rotary Awareness Month, the perfect time for Interactors, Rotaractors, and RYLA participants to refresh their knowledge of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. Here are just a few ways you can help spread the word about Rotary this month:

§         Read a few words about Rotary Awareness Month from Foundation Trustee Chair Glenn E. Estess Sr.

§         Visit www.rotary.org to learn more about the history of the organization and the many programs and opportunities Rotary offers to its New Generations.

§         Promote Interact or Rotaract service activities or an upcoming RYLA event in your community.

§         Feature the activities that Interactors in your area performed during November's World Interact Week in your next district newsletter.

Building awareness of Rotary strengthens the organization's future and the future of its youth and young adult programs. Informed program participants can inspire and attract new club members or RYLA attendees. With support from the community and local Rotary clubs, there's no limit to what Rotary's New Generations can accomplish!

2010 International RYLA application deadline extended to 15 March

The deadline to apply for the 2010 International RYLA has been extended to 15 March. The International RYLA is an advanced leadership training event where young adults participate in discussions and activities related to issues of international interest, such as peace and conflict resolution and clean water scarcity. Aside from joining in the group discussions and training exercises, attendees will be able to network with other exceptional young leaders from around the world. This special event will be held 17-20 June in Montréal, Québec, Canada, immediately before the 2010 RI Convention.

Though the first deadline to apply passed on 15 December, applications are still being considered on a rolling basis, space permitting. Eligible participants are between the ages of 18 and 30, have extensive experience with any Rotary youth or educational program, and are not Rotarians. We strongly recommend that interested candidates submit an application with all required signatures as soon as possible, but no later than 15 March. Apply now!

End Polio Now stars

Rotaract Club of Coastal Carolina University

January's End Polio Now star is the Rotaract Club of Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, USA.

On 16 November, purple finger nails began appearing on pinkie fingers all over the Coastal Carolina University campus as part of Purple Pinkie Day, held by members of the university's Rotaract club to raise money for polio eradication. Members of the sponsor Rotary Club of Carolina Forest Sunrise joined them for this special day on campus. The Carolina Forest Chick-fil-A also was present, offering free chicken biscuits, coupons, and an interactive game.

The students were inspired by the practice of painting children's fingernails purple once they've received the polio vaccine. More than 400 students and faculty participated in the Purple Pinkie Day, raising over US$700 to support Rotary's efforts to eradicate polio. Purple pinkies flooded the campus, reminding each and every donor how a small contribution can save one more child from the poliovirus.

If you have an End Polio Now success story to share, e-mail it to rotary's200millionchallenge@rotary.org, and you could be featured in a future issue!
